What Happened to the Amalekites?

Do you have Bible questions? Let the Scriptures surprise you with clear and powerful answers. One common question people ask is: What really happened to the Amalekites?

At first glance, it seems the Bible says they were completely destroyed several times, yet they keep appearing in the story. Let’s take a closer look.

Saul’s Campaign

1 Samuel 15:7–8, 20
Saul attacked the Amalekites and defeated Agag’s army. The text says he “totally destroyed” the people with the sword. However, this referred specifically to Agag’s forces, not every Amalekite who existed. Saul’s mission was incomplete because he spared Agag, and survivors remained elsewhere.

David’s Raids

1 Samuel 27:8–9
David raided areas where the Amalekites lived, and in each place he “left no man or woman alive.” This shows he wiped out the Amalekites in those regions, but not all of them everywhere.

The Ziklag Incident

1 Samuel 30:1–2, 17
A raiding band of Amalekites attacked Ziklag and carried off captives. David pursued them and defeated them thoroughly, though 400 Amalekites escaped on camels. This was again a partial destruction, not total extermination.

The Simeonite Attack

1 Chronicles 4:42–43
Much later, a group of Simeonites killed the Amalekites who had settled in the hill country of Seir. This account refers to the Amalekites living in that specific place, not the entire nation.

The Big Picture

When we put these passages together, there is no contradiction. Each story speaks about a battle against Amalekites in a particular time and location.

  • Saul defeated Agag’s army.

  • David wiped out groups of Amalekites in his raids.

  • David later crushed a raiding band, though some escaped.

  • The Simeonites destroyed another group in Seir.

The Amalekites were nomadic and spread across wide areas. That is why one group could be destroyed while others survived elsewhere. Over time, Israel’s repeated victories eventually reduced and scattered them until the Amalekites disappeared from history.

Answer: The Amalekites were destroyed in stages, in different places, and at different times, until they finally ceased to exist.
