Wasn’t Babylon supposed to be desolate forever?
Wasn’t Babylon supposed to be desolate forever?
a) The prophecy
Jeremiah 50:39 and Isaiah 13:19–20 declare that Babylon would become desolate, never to be inhabited again. This seems difficult, since Babylon continued to exist for centuries after these prophecies.
b) The history
The Neo-Babylonian Empire was conquered by Cyrus the Great around 539 BC, bringing an end to its rule forever. The city of Babylon, once the wonder of the world, began to decline after this conquest. Over time, it lost its significance and by 800 AD was completely abandoned. For centuries, its ruins lay buried in sand until archaeologists uncovered them in the late 1800s. Modern attempts to rebuild or restore Babylon have repeatedly failed, disrupted by wars and instability in the region.
c) The fulfillment
Babylon as an empire, nation, and people has vanished. The once-glorious city is now nothing more than ruins. In this way, the words of Jeremiah and Isaiah stand confirmed—Babylon became desolate and has never risen again.
