Didn’t God promise Josiah a peaceful death?

In 2 Kings 22:20, God promises Josiah that he will be “gathered to his grave in peace.” At first glance, this seems confusing, since Josiah died from battle wounds (2 Kings 23:29–30; 2 Chronicles 35:23–24)—a death that hardly looks peaceful.

A closer look at 2 Kings 22:20 reveals that the promise is not about the manner of Josiah’s death, but the circumstances of his burial:

“Surely, therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the calamity which I will bring on this place.”
—2 Kings 22:18–20 (NKJV)

Most translations follow this same rendering, but the NIV makes it even clearer:

“Therefore I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.”
—2 Kings 22:20 (NIV)

The key is in the final phrase: “your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.” God was assuring Josiah that he would not live to see Judah’s destruction under Babylon. His death, though violent, came before the great national calamity.

Thus, the promise was not that Josiah would die peacefully, but that he would be buried in peace, spared from witnessing the judgment coming upon his nation. And in this, God’s word was faithfully fulfilled.
