Counterfeit authority in the Bible refers to false teachings or claims of authority that are not supported by scripture. Jesus warned his disciples about such false prophets, saying, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15). The Apostle Paul also cautioned the early church about those who would attempt to deceive them, saying, “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:13).

Here are a few examples of counterfeit authority in the Bible:

Adding to or taking away from God’s word: In Deuteronomy 4:2, God warns his people not to add to or take away from his word, lest they be punished. In Revelation 22:18-19, a similar warning is given to those who would tamper with the words of the prophecy of this book. Anyone who claims to have new revelation that contradicts the Bible is operating under counterfeit authority.

Teaching for selfish gain: In 1 Timothy 6:3-5, Paul warns against those who teach false doctrines for their own selfish gain. He says that such people are conceited, understanding nothing, and have an unhealthy craving for controversy and quarrels. Their teachings are not from God, but rather from their own desires.

Claiming to be an apostle without evidence: In Revelation 2:2, Jesus commends the church in Ephesus for testing those who claim to be apostles and finding them to be false. Paul also defends his own apostleship in 2 Corinthians 12:11-12, saying that the signs of a true apostle were performed among the Corinthians. Anyone who claims to be an apostle without evidence is operating under counterfeit authority.

Denying Jesus Christ: In 1 John 4:1-3, John warns against false prophets who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. He says that such a person is not from God, but is instead from the spirit of the antichrist. Anyone who denies that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the only way to salvation is operating under counterfeit authority.

In summary, counterfeit authority in the Bible is any teaching or claim of authority that contradicts or adds to God’s word, is motivated by selfish gain, is not supported by evidence, or denies the truth of Jesus Christ. As believers, we must be discerning and test all teachings and claims of authority against the truth of scripture.
